Day 1

Posted on March 6, 2020March 6, 2020

Day one

We hiked 8.1 miles today.

The day started off with us waking up spring mountain. At the bottom of the mountain we decided to dropped our packs. We ran up the mountain. It felt great to be free I had only worn my pack for two minutes and it already felt good to take it off. At the top of the mountain we took at picture of the Starting rock and ran back down. When we got back down and looked at the clock. 34 minutes. I felt great about that that normally when we hike in the white mountains you can only go one mile an hour.We put our packs on and head off.

The first mile with my pack was great along with the second, but the I could start to feel the weight of my 22 pound pack on my hips and shoulders.

most of the day’s conversations were revoked around us not believing that we were actually in Georgia along with some Spanish and other topics here and their.

When we were about a mile from the first shelter that we a would be staying at we met chelsea who is a rige runner. She talked Spanish with us for a little bit but then she stoped and we continued on walking.

After about a half an hour after we finished talking to Chelsea we had mad it to hall mountain camp sight. We walked down a tenth of a mile to the first bear box which is just a blade to keep your food so bears can’t get it. Anyway I put my bag in their because I have all the food but we continued to walk down to try and find the shelter. After five of walking down their was still no shelter. We asked a person at one of the tent sites where it was and he said the it was not even the right came site. Reluctantly we walked back up to the bear box. I sat their while my mom ran to the top to check the map, apparently we still had to walk another mile. I was confused because the map did not show a difference between a tent sight and a shelter. We decided that it would be best if we went to the shelter so we would not have to be wet if it rained the next day.

Finally we made it to hawk mountain campsite. I was so tired that I just dropped my pack at the lean-too. It was totally worth it. We got their and met really great people one person was book( that’s her trail name). I came up with it. She told us that she had brought 4 big chapter book which made her bace weight 35 pound. I was shocked my mom was carring a bace weight for two people at 25 pounds. The rest of the night everyone just cooked dinner and then went to bed a 6:30 pm which was great. And that’s it for day one.

Trail name-a name you get while hiking that you got because of something you did. People know you by this name.

bace weight– you packs weight before food and water. Ultralight backpacking 10 pounds or under. Normally you have bace weight of under 25 pounds.

I was in the army and are packs were 85lbs. And believe me it didn’t take long to notice them. As for food I carried only salt and coffee. I foraged my food from the mountains. I’m half Indian and my family believed in the old ways. I learned a lot as a child and it’s stuck with me. I gather medical roots every fall. Some I sell and some I keep for myself for meds. I’m proud to say that I haven’t had a common cold in 19 years and I’m 63 years young and teach a survival class for free to anyone that is interested in learning. I also read and write Braille. I’m a Braille transcriber. You guys (gals)are doing great. Make sure to not get discouraged and worry about making it to the next shelter every day and take time to enjoy the experience keep me posted, and who knows I’m on the trail quite a bit and in the mountains always we might have the opportunity of meeting. I Go By River Bill. Have fun.
